Wigan Jazz Festival: Marc Almond & Jools

The 29th annual Wigan Jazz Festival features AJ Brown and Clare Teal as well as Marc Almond + Jools Holland’s R&B Orchestra

This year’s Wigan Jazz Festival, the 29th (10-13 July), offers a wide spread of music with, as usual, an emphasis on the big band.

The Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra headlines with guest singers Melanie C and Marc Almond (pictured) – the latter likely to be particularly interesting in a jazz context. Also on the vocal front, Clare Teal and her Hollywood Orchestra will mark Doris Day’s 90th birthday and AJ Brown will play with the ever-popular Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Instrumentals come into focus in appearances by Dizzy Gillespie protégé Jon Faddis (with the Wigan Club Reunion Dream Band), the University of South Florida Jazztet and the SK2 Jazz Orchestra, which will salute the music of Stan Kenton. Other highlights include the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Merseyside Jazz Showcase and the Super C Big Band, the latter dedicated to the memory of trumpeter Derek Watkins.

The festival takes place at the Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre. More information can be got from www.wlct.org/jazz and tickets booked at boxoffice.wlct.org, by calling 01942 828271, or by booking in person at Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre or Haigh Country Park.
