Winner of the Grand Prize ($25,000 US cash and over $35,000 US in merchandise and services) in the US-based 2013 International Songwriting Competition was Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ohno for his funky jazz track Musashi. Judges included Joshua Redman and McCoy Tyner and all styles of music were eligible . . . Chris Hodgkins is to retire as director of Jazz Services Ltd after 29 years’ service and hopes to focus more time on the thing that drove him into jazz promotion – the trumpet . . . Nice jazz festival (8-12 July, nicejazzfestival.fr) includes Richard Galliano, Deep Purple, Ibrahim Maalouf, Kenny Garrett, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Cécile McLorin Salvant and Nikki Yanofsky . . . Glasgow jazz festival (25-29 June) includes Martin Taylor, Courtney Pine, Zara McFarlane, Neil Cowley Trio, Dennis Rollins, Sons of Kemet, Evan Parker and Jazz Jamaica.
