Ystad 2014: Scofield, Ibrahim, Lloyd

In its fifth year the Ystad jazz festival in Sweden fields another outstanding jazz programme despite limited public subsidy

This year’s Ystad, Sweden festival, 30 July - 4 August, boasts a spectacular parade of local and international jazz talent. Among the leading foreign visitors are Abdullah Ibrahim, John Scofield (pictured right), Joshua Redman, Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Gregory Hutchinson, Diane Schuur, Charles Lloyd, Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders, Gerald Cleaver and Enrico Rava.

Others appearing, from home and abroad, include Gianluca Petrella, Cristina Branco, Sinne Eeg, Nicole Johänntgen, Remi Panossian, Nicolas Gardel, Roberta Gambarini, Smoking Mouse, Jukka Perko, Marilyn Mazur, Alex Riel, Jesper Lundgaard, Kristin Korb, Bengt-Arne Wallin, Bohuslän Big Band, Anders Ekdahl Seven Piece Band, Swedish Statesmen Jazz Group, Fredrik Kronkvist, Miriam Aida, Marilyn Mazur, Georg Riedel, Sara Riedel, Monica Dominique, Birgit Lindberg, Gunhild Carling, Isabella Lundgren, Hannah Svensson, Filip Jers, XL Big Band, Caroline Leander, Anna Pauline, AVA and many more.

The festival, directed by pianist and Fresh Sound recording artist Jan Lundgren (pictured left with Wallander star Krister Henriksson), has over four years offered a progressively more colourful and distinguished programme of major names from across the jazz spectrum despite receiving minimal public funding and relying on the sterling efforts of volunteer workers – in contrast to other fully staffed and funded events in Scandinavia.

This year, the festival’s applications for funding from arts bodies that supported 70 other Swedish music events were rejected on grounds including insufficient international reach and inadequate representation of women performers. Around 50 percent of the performers in the preliminary list issued by Ystad and announced above are either female or from outside Sweden with names such as Scofield, Ibrahim, Redman and Lloyd major international attractions.
