The National Jazz Archive of Loughton, Essex has a lively spring ahead. It hosts an exhibition from 6 March to 29 April titled All That Jazz: The Golden Age of British Popular Music 1919-1950 which will explore the social and cultural impact of jazz on British life during the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition will feature original memorabilia from the period including posters, programmes and photos relating to The Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Humphrey Lyttelton and Glenn Miller and others. Details here. In a second spring event, on Saturday 15 March, Peter Vacher will talk about some of the interviews in his new book Mixed Messages: American Jazz Stories. The 30th edition of the Brecon Jazz Festival (8-10 August) pays tribute to the festival’s roots with a line-up featuring the revived 1980s big band Loose Tubes, Warren Vaché (who will appear with saxophonist Alan Barnes) and local band Mike Harries and the Root Doctors. Vaché and Cardiff-based Harries were both present at the first Brecon Jazz Festival in 1984, while Loose Tubes made an appearance there in 1985. The programme also features Burt Bacharach, Zara McFarlane, Jean Toussaint, Michael Wollny, Dennis Rollins, Fapy Lafertin, Troyka, Huw Warren, Clark Tracey, Don Weller, David Newton, Kairos 4Tet, Marius Neset Quartet, Gregory Porter, Trish Clowes, Christine Tobin, Vinicius Cantuária, The Big Chris Barber Band, John Taylor, Polar Bear and more. Tickets and more information at breconjazz.com . . . New Art Deco venue Crazy Coqs, at 20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, is putting the cabaret back into jazz. On the bill in the near future are Aaron Weinstein (11-15 March), a violinist and bow-tie rights activist whom Dave Gelly has described as “so dry that they should put out drought notices wherever he appears”, Marlene VerPlanck (18 to 22 March), guitarist John Etheridge (1 to 3 April) and Claire Martin and Joe Stilgoe (15 to 19 April). There are also late night jazz sessions through March and April. More details here . . . Jazz winners at the 56th Grammys included Wayne Shorter (best soloist), Gregory Porter (best vocal album), Terri Lyne Carrington (best jazz instrumental album), Randy Brecker (best large jazz ensemble album) and Paquito D’Rivera And Trio Corrente (best Latin jazz album). Outside jazz, the late Clare Fischer won best instrumental composition with Gordon Goodwin a nominee, and Manfred Eicher of ECM was nominated but did not win producer of the year, classical.
