Gismonti and Towner double bill

Guitar virtuosos and pioneers of the jazz-plus-folk style, Egberto Gismonti and Ralph Towner will play a set at the London Barbican this February

As part of the Barbican’s spring programme, guitar maestros Egberto Gismonti (pictured) and Ralph Towner will share double billing at the concert hall on 27 February.

Washington-born Towner opens the set; having worked over the years with musicians such as vibraphonist Gary Burton and guitarist John Abercrombie, Towner is a founding member of quartet Oregon. His playing has been described by The Guardian as “tantalising musical storytelling…full of rich life”. His most recent album is Travel Guide, with Wolfgang Muthspiel and Slava Grigoryan.

Called a “tour de force” by The Guardian, Rio de Janeiro-born Gismonti follows Towner with a set expected to exemplify his charismatic, rhythmic playing. A prolific composer and virtuosic pianist as well as guitarist, Gismonti appeared at London’s 2012 Jazz Festival to much acclaim.

The double bill starts at 7.30pm at the London Barbican in the main hall on Thursday 27 February. Tickets are from £17.50 to £25 and can be booked at barbican.org.uk (£2 booking fee).
