Michel Camilo: Latin Jazz Album Grammy

Dave Jones, author of Jazz Journal's Camilo cover feature in June 2013, reports the pianist has won yet another Latin Jazz Grammy Award

Pianist and composer Michel Camilo has very recently won the Best Latin Jazz Album Of The Year Grammy Award for his 2013 OKeh release What’s Up? (reviewed in the July issue of JJ).

The album is a musical statement of intent, mixing his own originals with standards, and presenting a unique challenge in a solo piano context. Competition was very strong in this category, particularly from the 2010 Grammy Award winning Chucho Valdes and his excellent Border-Free album (reviewed in the August issue of JJ).

Camilo must now be starting to run out of space on the mantelpiece for his numerous Grammys collected over the years, in both Latin Jazz and Classical categories.
