Early Wayne Shorter boxed

Proper are releasing a box set collecting Wayne Shorter's early work on Vee-Jay and as MD for Art Blakey on four CDs with extensive notes

Proper Records write as follows about Beginnings, the latest Properbox (#178), which captures Wayne Shorter's embryonic writing style as embodied by his works for Vee-Jay and with Art Blakey:

'Today saxophonist Wayne Shorter is recognised as one of the jazz greats of our time. Best known for his time with Miles Davis and for a remarkable series of albums recorded for Blue Note in the sixties, he went on to find even greater fame as co-leader of groundbreaking jazz-rock band Weather Report. Still active as he approaches his 80th birthday he currently leads one of the most musically adventurous quartets operating in today’s jazz scene. This collection, however, showcases his very first sessions as leader and reveals his budding talents as a highly individial improvisor and outstanding composer.

'Included in the set are selections from Shorter’s albums on the Vee-Jay together with tracks recorded as sideman with pianist Wynton Kelly on the same label. Also represented is the saxophonist’s tenure as musical director with drummer Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, a unit that recorded prolifically for a number of labels in the early 1960’s, and whose albums contained many fine examples from Shorter’s pen.'

Properbox 178 is released in the UK on 19 August 2013.
