Preview: Inverurie Jazz Festival 2013

The second Inverurie Jazz Festival in Aberdeenshire features among its several attractions the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra led by Tommy Smith

Following the success of the first Inverurie Jazz Festival last year, this year’s second event in the Aberdeenshire town takes place from 26 to 28 July.

Run by the Garioch Jazz Club, which was set up in 1983 to provide a hub for jazz lovers in the Inverurie area, the three-day festival features concerts from prominent jazz players as well as jazz master classes.

Headlining the festival is the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (pictured) led by Tommy Smith with Brian Kellock on piano. The popular orchestra will play a selection of Duke Ellington numbers at Inverurie Town Hall on Friday 26 July.

Other acts appearing include the Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra featuring Rat Pack trio Oceans 3; songbook-singer Marisha Addison; the Black Isle Jazz Band playing a mixture of blues and ragtime; the Kit Carey Jazz Band; the Moray Jazz Sextet; Quattro MacJazz playing Dixieland and gospel; the all-female Alex Silver Quintet from Australia; and the Atholl Smith Jazz Band.

Various ticket options are available, and can be purchased online at jazz-club.co.uk, where you can also find detailed ticket prices. You can also book tickets by sending an SAE and cheque made out to Garioch Jazz Club to Ian Crighton, Oatlands, Leschangie, Kemnay, Inverurie, AB51 5PP.
