New acts added to Brecon Jazz roster

Django Bates, John Etheridge, Nils Petter Molvaer and a new all-day event in collaboration with Welsh jazz clubs and societies have been added to the Brecon Jazz Festival

The last day of Brecon Jazz Festival (9 to 11 August) will feature a day-long event at the town's Guildhall venue, in a new collaboration between local jazz clubs and societies and festival operator Orchard. A ticket for the whole day to see all the concerts at the venue costs £25.

On Sunday 11 August, Welsh jazz initiatives including Brecon Jazz Club, North Wales Jazz Society, Porthcawl Jazz Festival and Torfaen Jazz Society will stage concerts at the Guildhall throughout the day, including the Arturo Serra Quartet with Celia Mur, Shades of Shearing Quartet, Davide Logiri and Balanca.

Balanca is a new quintet led by master's student Cathy Jones (pictured), who together play a mixture of bossa nova and Brazilian-influenced rhythms. The Arturo Serra Quartet play Spanish jazz, and will feature on this occasion the nuevo flamenco singer Celia Mur, who is currently lead vocalist with the Granada Big Band.

Italian pianist Davide Logiri will collaborate with Torfaen Jazz to produce a unique Italian-Welsh mix of jazz styles, with original compositions as well as Shorter and Corea standards. Finally, Shades of Shearing will play a range of Shearing-inspired classics.

Since our story on the Brecon Jazz Festival in February, other names including Django Bates, Julian Siegel, the Blue Spirits Trio led by John Etheridge, the Laurence Cottle Trio, and the Nils Petter Molvaer Trio have been added to the line-up. See breconjazz.com for full festival details.
