Jazz and poetry in Lyric Ensemble tour

Saxophonist Tony Woods, whom JJ noted for the 'elegant saxophone colour' he brought to the late Michael Garrick's Lyric Ensemble, tours the band in March with Nikki Iles in the piano chair and with singer Nette Robinson

The Lyric Ensemble, formed by the late Michael Garrick MBE in 2010, tour the UK this March.

The group, composed of Tony Woods (s), Nikki Iles (p), Matt Ridley (b) and Nette Robinson (v), perform a repertoire of poetry set to music arranged by pianist Michael Garrick. Particular highlights include Home Thoughts, From Abroad (after Robert Browning), Laughing Song (after William Blake) and Shall I Compare Thee (after Shakespeare).

Vocalist Nette Robinson (pictured) was described by Michael Garrick as "very accurate, very emotional", and the two collaborated on a range of compositions, arrangements and performances until his death in 2011. Nikki Iles has since taken on the pianist role in the Ensemble.

The Lyric Ensemble will perform at:

Dolgellau Music Club, 15 March; South Hill Park Arts Centre, 23 March; National Theatre Foyer, 30 March; Milestones Jazz Club, 7 April; Fleece Jazz, 12 April; Wakefield Jazz, 26 April; Forest Row Jazz, 19 May; Orange Tree Cellar Bar, 5 June; Birmingham Symphony Hall Foyer, 14 June; The Verdict, 22 June; Dempsey's, 22 June; and Swansea Jazzland, 26 June.
