Tessa Souter's new album and London gig
"Stunningly original" singer-songwriter Tessa Souter releases her new album in February, followed up by a two-night gig at Pizza Express Jazz Club, London
British-Trinidadian singer-songwriter Tessa Souter releases a new album next month; her fourth CD, titled Beyond The Blue, will go on sale in the UK on 4 February.
The album mixes newly arranged classical pieces from the likes of Chopin and Debussy arranged to jazz rhythms, along with Souter's own compositions, which have been called "stunningly original" by JazzTimes. The singer is supported on the album by pianist Steve Kuhn and his trio, with David Finck on bass and Billy Drummond on drums, along with Joel Frahm (ts), Joe Locke (vibes) and Gary Versace (acc).
London-born Tessa Souter moved to San Francisco in 1992, going on to study under Mark Murphy in New York in 1997. Now an international success with tour dates from Belarus to Russia, the singer has been described by Sheila Jordan as "at the top of my list of great talent".
To mark the release of Beyond The Blue in the UK, Souter will play two nights at the Pizza Express Jazz Club, London on 9 and 10 February accompanied by pianist Lynne Arriale.
