Liverpool gets new jazz festival

Liverpool's Capstone Theatre plays host to a new international jazz festival in the spring, featuring Courtney Pine among others

Courtney PineA new jazz festival launches in Liverpool this year, adding to the city's thriving calendar of musical events.

The inaugural Liverpool International Jazz Festival will take place at Liverpool's Capstone Theatre, the city's international arts venue, from 28 February to 3 March 2013. Acts already confirmed as part of the festival programme include Courtney Pine, Roller Trio, Robert Mitchell and the Kit Downes Quintet.

Roller Trio open the festival on Thursday 28 February, billed as a "rock-jazz band", while pianist and composer Robert Mitchell performs on Saturday 2 March. Pianist Kit Downes, described by The Telegraph as "an exceptional talent", will follow Mitchell's set with his quintet on Saturday.

Courtney Pine will be playing as part of his House of Legends tour, and will close the festival on Sunday 3 March. The saxophonist is expected to deliver another exciting set after his sell-out performance at the Capstone's launch in 2010.

There are also free events available throughout the four-day festival, including Liverpool-born Blind Monk and White Canvas. Two free saxophone workshops are also planned, exploring sound and improvisation techniques.

Neil Campbell of the Capstone Theatre said: "The Festival will be the first of its kind in Liverpool and will give the opportunity to bring together some of the most high profile national and international artists alongside some of the city's most creative local jazz musicians."
