New Cheltenham jazz venue for 2013

Alan Barnes and Dave Newton are among the highlights of the new jazz programme at the Playhouse Theatre in Cheltenham next year

Dave NewtonThe Venue Jazz Club, which has been hosted in various pubs and clubs throughout the Cotswolds over the years, brings a new programme of jazz to the Playhouse Theatre in Cheltenham in 2013.

Saxophonist and clarinettist Alan Barnes pairs up with pianist Dave Newton for the first event on 6 January 2013, performing music from their new album Inside Out. Having played together for over 30 years, the two musicians have created a sound that pays tribute to their various jazz muses, from Chick Corea to Don Redman.

Alan Barnes, who plays alto and baritone saxophone as well as clarinet, has won Best Instrumentalist at the BBC Jazz Awards three times and has played with big band leaders from Kenny Baker to Bob Wilber. Dave Newton (pictured) has had similar success at the British Jazz Awards with 11 Best Pianist awards to his name.

The set by Barnes and Newton will be followed by performances from John Etheridge on 14 April, Peter and Geoff Simkins on 14 July, and Barb Jungr on 20 October.
