Richie leaps in - once every four years

Our virtual Californian Gordon Sapsed reports on one notable leap year jazz birthday last month

Richie Cole blowsRenowned saxophonist Richie Cole was born on 29 February 1948 and celebrated the event in a "Sweet 16" party with friends, fans and fellow musicians at The Typhoon Restaurant in Santa Monica, Ca.

We were lucky enough to be there and to hear his Alto Madness Orchestra, an octet which included Carl Saunders, Bruce Forman, Doug Webb and Dave Tull. Bruce Forman (g) Carl Saunders (t), Doug Webb (ts), Dave Ryan (tb), Lou Forestieri (p), John Leftwich (b) and Dave Tull (d).

It was, of course, only the 16th real birthday for this Leap Year baby but like Jazz Journal he has been going strong for 64 years and was in blazing form with material from his bebop years, as well as full band arrangements and quartet ballads.
