Barbican's blaze of jazz

Randy Brecker

This summer's Blaze festival in and around London's Barbican Centre features a strong jazz contingent.

It kicks off with a mixed bill of fusion and hard bop in an evening featuring Randy Brecker and Bill Evans in Soulbop with Medeski Martin and Wood plus the Terence Blanchard Band (Barbican, 7 July).

African jazz is the theme at Hackney Empire on 10 & 11 July when the focus is on Hugh Masekela and his band with special guest South African stars Vusi Mahlasela, Thandiswa and Lira in a celebration of the music of Miriam Makeba.

The finale to the jazz season is bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding (Barbican, 11 July) who was cover feature in January 2011 Jazz Journal.
