Miles with Lester shock

Reader Dave Taylor savours a rare Miles Davis recording with Lester Young and the MJQ

I was astonished to hear recently a fascinating version of How High The Moon with the unique line-up of Miles Davis, Lester Young and the MJQ! It can be found on an obscure CD, Miles Davis European Tour '56 (Definitive DRCD 11294) which documents the few surviving recordings from Miles's 22-concert European tour with the Birdland All Stars in November 1956.

Also included on the CD is the complete set from Miles's legendary appearance at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival (introduced by Duke Ellington) which features an inspired version of 'Round Midnight with Thelonious Monk. Miles's playing made a great impact on audience and critics alike and brought about a resurgence in his career. The memorable music on this 74-minute album deserves a place in any Miles Davis collection.
