NEW JAZZ HISTORY FOR RADIO 2

Trumpeter Guy Barker is to present a new 10-part series on BBC Radio 2 written by Russell Davies, Brian Priestley and Dave Gelly. Called Jazz Junctions, the series sets out to examine the turning points in the development of jazz style. It’s scheduled for every Wednesday at 10pm beginning 6 October and producer Patrick Johns tells JJ the rough plan for content is as follows:

1. Jazz Goes Global: Jazz is recorded and spreads world-wide. 2. The Birth of the Solo: Louis Armstrong leads the way as the first great jazz improviser. 3. Swing! Swing! Swing! Benny Goodman and the Big Band Era. 4. Body and Soul: Coleman Hawkins Sows the Seeds of Modern Jazz. 5. The Night We Called It A Day: Frank Sinatra and the Sing Era. 6. Oop Bop Sh’Bam! Bebop changes the musical world forever. 7. Birth of the Cool: Miles Davis leads the way with a whole new style of jazz. 8. A Love Supreme: Free Jazz and Jazz-Rock. 9. Belonging: the Separate life of European Jazz. 10. The Shape of Jazz to Come: Jazz today and recent junctions.
