Mathias Eick's 80,000 horn of plenty

Michael Tucker's endorsement in December's Jazz Journal of trumpeter Mathias Eick has proved percipient, prophetic and possibly - JJ's international reach is long - influential. The young Norwegian has just won a prize of over £80,000 - a staggering, and perhaps unprecedented, sum for a jazz musician - at the 2009 'by:Larm' music festival in Oslo. The award of NOK 800,000 was granted by the Norwegian company StatoilHydro to further the international profile and development of Eick's quartet. The jury, in a unanimous verdict, declared Eick's quartet was on its way to "an international breakthrough". Britain will be the first country to stage a major tour by the group, which will perform music from its highly acclaimed ECM album, The Door, when they visit Manchester, Halifax, Edinburgh, Oxford, Much Wenlock, London and Nottingham from 22 April. The band finishes its tour at the Bray Jazz Festival in Ireland on 1 May.
