Preview: Ed Jones tours new album

Saxophonist Ed Jones is about to take his quartet on a spring tour of England in support of its latest album, For Your Ears Only

Saxophonist and composer Ed Jones (pictured right) is taking his quartet – Ross Stanley on piano, Riaan Vosloo on bass and Tim Gilles on drums – on a tour of 18 venues across England during April, May and June this year.

Jones was originally signed to Acid Jazz Records by DJ Gilles Peterson and spent some years as a member of Incognito. He formed the quartet in 2011, inspired by the music of Wayne Shorter. The quartet now plays original compositions written by Jones and Vosloo. The band’s album, For Your Ears Only (Impossible Ark Records), is Jones’s first since 2003’s Seven Moments and features a guest appearance from vocalist Brigitte Beraha.

For Your Ears Only receives a five-star review from Dave Jones (no relation) in Jazz Journal April 2018. He describes the “excellent … strongly recommended” album as a mix of hard-blowing post-bop and longer, freer, tracks, linked by Beraha’s vocal number Starbright (For Wayne Shorter). Ed Jones will be the subject of a profile in the May edition of JJ.
