FROM THE EDITOR
There were gasps when Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Leaving aside general suitability and suggestions the Nobel committee’s motivation was populist, it seems fitting since he’s recognised as much as poet as musician. But the news as I write (18 October) indicates he may not be interested. Apparently, the prize committee has given up trying to reach him, five days after the award, and he didn’t mention it at a Las Vegas gig on the evening of the award. Mere oversight or could it be Dylan (aged 75) is being forever young and rebellious, cocking a snook at the establishment?

No doubt that establishment has its place in supporting the arts. Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries report that thanks to their awards totalling £430,000, 40 graduates from low-income backgrounds have completed paid placements at arts organisations around the UK. Of the 40, 28 remain employed by arts organisations. The question, as always, is will the beneficiaries still be in arts work when the help is long gone and commercial reality has supervened?

NIGEL PRICE
Nigel Price’s commitment to jazz guitar is matched by an organisational energy that has produced a 56-date UK tour. Bruce Lindsay catches him between choruses
