Preview: Chris Barber's 67 years on stage

The BIG Chris Barber Band celebrates Barber's 67th anniversary as a bandleader with a September Cadogan Hall concert and dates across England

On 9 September, British jazz stalwart Chris Barber (pictured right by Luc Lodder) and his BIG Chris Barber Band will perform at Cadogan Hall in London to celebrate his 67th anniversary as a bandleader. The BIG Chris Barber Band will perform a selection of Barber’s favourite tracks, featuring everything from New Orleans to blues to late-20s Duke Ellington.

Aside from leading his own bands, Chris Barber, now OBE, gave many upcoming musicians a stage to play on at the beginning of their careers and is considered to be one of the main initiators of R&B in the UK and Europe. In the 1950s and 60s Barber introduced and toured with many American blues musicians such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Big Bill Broonzy and Sister Rosetta Tharpe: musicians who inspired bands like The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Sex Pistols. Barber was also a founding member of the Marquee Club in London's Soho, one of the most famous clubs on the scene.

The Barber band is regarded as one of the best of its kind. The promoter says the audience at Cadogan Hall can count on an exciting evening of high quality jazz and blues which will appeal in equal measure to the aficionado and the newcomer.

Tickets for the Cadogan Hall concert can be purchased at the hall's website or by phone on 020 7730 4500.
