Preview: Satchmo & Duke pics for auction

Drewatts and Bloomsbury are selling two vintage, autographed, photos of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington in a specialist London auction

On 9 June 2016 at 11am, Dreweatts and Bloomsbury will host an auction of Vintage Posters, Autographs and Memorabilia at their Bloomsbury Auctions base on Maddox Street, London. The auction's almost 400 lots include autographs and memorabilia from the worlds of art, film, TV, theatre, politics, literature, history, music and sport. Estimates range from £100-£3000.

Jazz fans are likely to be particularly interested in two lots in the music section: autographed photographs of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington early on in their careers.

Duke Ellington is captured in a vintage, black and white half-length photograph dated c. 1940s. The photograph (pictured right) is complete with printed signature and hand signed with the inscription: “To Harry Bacon, Duke Ellington” (Est: £300 - £400, Lot 357).

The rare vintage, sepia-toned, photograph of a young Louis Armstrong (pictured left) with his trumpet is signed and inscribed “My Best Wishes to Mr H. Bacon from Louis Armstrong, 1/20/” with the year cancelled out with a pen-drawn black square (Est: £300 - £400, Lot 350).

The auction features a few more jazz-related lots, including a group photo of Sonny Greer, Wellman Braud and Fred Guy; a photo of the Ellington Orchesta in the 40s; photos of female vocal groups the Andrews Sisters, the Boswell Sisters and the Mack Triplets; and a portrait photo of a young Frank Sinatra. There's also a photograph of that well-known amateur saxophonist and jazz fan Bill Clinton, receiving Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin at the White House in 1993 (Est: £1500-£2000, Lot 320).

Viewing takes place from Sunday 5 June. More information, including the auction catalogue, is available at the Bloomsbury Auctions website.
