BBC Young Musician Jazz Award on TV
Highlights of the BBC Young Musician 2016 Jazz Award final come to BBC Four television, presented by Josie D’Arby and Joe Stilgoe
A show dedicated to the BBC Young Musician 2016 Jazz Award will be broadcast on BBC Four on Friday 13 May, from 9.00pm to 11.00pm. The programme was recorded at the final of the BBC Young Musician 2016 Jazz Award, which took place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff in March (when Dave Jones reviewed the event for the Jazz Journal website).
Josie D’Arby and Joe Stilgoe (pictured right) will present the BBC Four show. The two-hour programme will feature some of the highlights of the final, in which each of the five finalists performed with the Gwilym Simcock Trio. They were judged by Tim Garland, Gwyneth Herbert, Zoe Rahman, Byron Wallen and the chair of the jury, Julian Joseph.
The finalists were all aged between 15-21 years old. They are Alexandra Ridout (trumpet), Tom Ridout (saxophone and recorder), Tom Smith (saxophone, pictured left), Noah Stoneman (piano) and Elliott Sansom (piano).
The BBC Young Musician Jazz Award was launched in 2014, running alongside the established classical music format - BBC Young Musician of the Year - and comprising two audition stages followed by a final. A short preview video of the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award 2016 can be viewed here.
