FROM THE EDITOR
I suppose we ought to mention International Jazz Day, which falls 30 April this year. It was founded in 2011 by UNESCO “to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people in all corners of the globe” and has been largely distinguished by widespread apathy – symptomatic perhaps of a jazz world indifferent to lofty PR exercises. Witness this year in London, buzzing hotbed of European jazz if we believe the publicists. The events map at jazzday.com shows five mostly low-key events in a city which has rather more jazz gigs just about every night of the week. Well done, those who have made the effort, including the White Lion in Streatham, but it’s hardly the massed battalions. However, this year the headline concert is at the White House with a lineup including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Elling, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride and Pat Metheny, to be broadcast on ABC TV. Trust the Americans to do a good job. Maybe that will keep IJD on the map once the glitz has died away.

RICHARD GALLIANO
