Preview: Ronnie Scott's Jazz Masters

The London club's new Jazz Masters series highlights the modern mainstream, with Kenny Barron, Eliane Elias, David Sanborn, Pat Metheny and more

Beginning in late March and carrying on through the following four months, Ronnie Scott's is to present a series of performances under the title Jazz Masters. The initiative is a way of gathering together and highlighting the club's continuing commitment to the modern mainstream and its leading practitioners, among them several virtually household names.

Kenny Barron (pictured right by Bruce Lindsay) kicks off the series on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 March. He's followed by another nine players, with Charles McPherson bringing the programme to a close on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July.

According to Ronnie Scott's "The Jazz Masters strand... aims to throw a spotlight on those artists whose rich heritage and masterful interpretation of the jazz tradition has pushed the music forward providing the touchstone for their fellow artists. They are instantly recognisable, vastly influential and their artistry illuminates the jazz world. Some are innovators and boundary pushers while others keep the flame of tradition burning brightly. A Jazz Master artist has built a global fanbase and carved out their own niche as a musical icon. Ronnie Scott’s are proud to present these true Jazz Masters..."

The series will feature each star musician together with a small band, usually trio or quintet. Pianist Monty Alexander is the exception to this rule. He'll play a six-night residency with his trio for the first three nights and then with his Harlem-Kingston Express 2, a sextet, on the next three nights.
