The life and music of Ian Carr are remembered at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London (0844 875 0073) on 23 February in Ian Carr: Celebration Of A Life In Music. Trumpeter Carr died in February 2009 and a year on his friends and musical associates gather to mark a series of collaborations stretching back to the 1960s. Pianist Michael Garrick will introduce a band reflecting the music of the Don Rendell–Ian Carr Quintet and Garrick's own sextet of the 1960s, with saxophonist Don Rendell appearing alongside Norma Winstone, Henry Lowther, Art Themen, Dave Green and Trevor Tomkins. Guy Barker is the soloist in Ian's Northumbrian Sketches, featuring members of Nucleus including drummer John Marshall and conducted by Mike Gibbs. Nucleus, Carr's electric jazz group founded in 1969, itself reappears as Nucleus Revisited, with original members Geoff Castle, Phil Todd, Mark Wood, Rob Statham and Nic France and special guests Chris Batchelor, Tim Whitehead and Ray Russell. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Alzheimer's Society. |
